Commercially to buy tooling boards, you can get two different well-known types. These are polyurethane and epoxy board which both have different properties meaning they are best utilised in differing properties. Manufacturers rely on tooling boards in a wide range of commercial setups as well as in day-to-day life.

Tooling boards are made from filled polymer materials which are then bonded together to form more useful larger blocks. When you buy tooling board, it can be shaped by hand, but the usual chosen method is CNC machining.

There is a wide range of densities available when you buy tooling boards. Typically, the price is closely correlated with the density with the higher costing more – so you want to use the lightest material you can and still get good results.

Epoxy Tooling Boards

Epoxy Tooling Boards withstand high-temperature applications (up to 230 degrees), so are used when the material needs to be put under intense stress to be shaped. It has high dimensional stability and therefore works well when highly accurate and complex moulds are required.

Polyurethane tooling boards

Polyurethane tooling boards are sold at a lower cost than epoxy due to it not being able to be heated to as high of a temperature to shape. This makes them the ideal choice for prototype model work as they are very lightweight and versatile, often seen on film sets to set up as props.
